Schedule of Upcoming Events
Monday, Sept. 20, 7PM Tuesday, Sept. 21, 4 to 7 PM Thursday, Sept. 23, 12 noon Thursday, Sept. 23, 6 PM Volunteers are needed every day from Monday to
Thursday at the No Slots Spot -- if you can offer time, please reply to
this email and let us know! |
We've been fighting for four years against the predatory
exploitation of
Philly residents and workers by casinos.
On Monday, Sept. 20, at 7 PM, we'll mark the opening of the
SugarHouse
casino with a memorial for what might have been. RSVP now for the memorial service (or
on Facebook).
We know that for every job created by a casino in Philadelphia, three jobs will be lost.
Those jobs will be
local jobs, in local businesses, driven out by a predatory industry
looking to
extract money from our communities and our neighbors. We know the
casinos will
be paying substandard wages,
risking their
employees' -- and patrons' -- health by ignoring the indoor smoking ban,
and physically intimidate workers
who try to
unionize. Our job, then,
is to continue to
grow the movement for a more sustainable city. That's why later next
week,
we'll be holding a rally at SugarHouse on opening day,
unveiling
our plans to shut down the casino and revitalize the riverfront with
our
1,000-square-foot mural. That evening, there will be a chance to
participate in
our first "casino watch" patrol as we monitor the predatory tactics
of SugarHouse. You'll hear more about both of these events early next
week.
It's true -- nobody has shut down a casino before. So be it. No
casino has
ever come to Philadelphia before. No casino has ever faced sustained
opposition
before. They're counting on a city that gives up. We are very far from
giving
up. We are just getting started. We are done when they are gone.
Unlike anywhere else, Philadelphia is still fighting back. We
will
continue to increase pressure on casinos, preventing them from opening
when we
can and shutting them down when we must. Join us next week, and we'll
make
history.

Hello BDS Philly/PJJP/SUSTAIN Community,
As many of you already know, PJJP/SUSTAIN have
started a new
local initiative called Philly BDS, to support the Palestinian call for
boycott, sanctions, and divestment from Israel. Our first major
campaign is a
consumer boycott campaign, aimed at holding accountable the companies
who make
Sabra and Tribe hummus for their support of Israel's human rights
abuses.
Please visit our website www.phillybds.org
for more background information. Also for more background on the global
BDS
movement, please go to: http://bdsmovement.net/
As our allies and supporters, and people who
may be
interested in getting more involved, we would like to invite you to a
community
gathering and meeting to discuss more about the campaign, to hear your
ideas
and feedback, and to identify ways that supporters can get involved in
our
launch event and the broader campaign. Of course, there are no
obligations for
anyone to get involved, and your feedback and ideas are much
appreciated!

ACTION:
Subject: 48 hours
to tell
the FDA you won’t eat GMO salmon
Sign
this petition and send your message to the
FDA:
I
urge you to reject the approval of
AquaBounty's genetically modified GMO salmon.
As the first transgenic species to be intended for human consumption,
AquaBounty's GMO fish has failed to meet the most basic requirements of
peer-reviewed scientific standards. Unfortunately, the FDA has failed
to
require rigorous independent testing to adequately protect the safety
of human
health, wild fish populations and the environment.
It is unacceptable that consumers continue to be denied their right to
know
what's in their food and how it's produced. Also, under current law,
these
genetically engineered salmon would not have to be labeled, therefore
leaving
consumers in the dark about what they are eating.
Click here to tell the FDA to
deny
approval of GMO Salmon.

Now is the moment to cut the military budget

* Here's our best opportunity to do this
now:
Democrat Barney Frank (MA) and Republican Ron
Paul (TX)
have presented specific recommendations for cutting almost $1 trillion
from the
Pentagon's vast budget over the next ten years. But they need your U.S.
representatives
to join them in sending this message.
Your previous work on these issues have helped
bring us
to this moment. Millions of people are now aware of how vast spending
on the
Iraq and Afghanistan wars has wasted resources and caused destruction
and
suffering at home and abroad. With more voices everyday calling for
cuts, the
Pentagon is beginning to feel the heat and even Secretary of Defense
Gates is
calling for "restraint" in military spending.
We believe we must go beyond
"restraint." But our window is limited.
If we can send a strong message in the next
days and
weeks, we can help shatter the privileged status enjoyed by military
spending.
We can refocus our country's priorities on what's most
important-jobs,
health care, education, human services-efforts that affirm the worth
and
dignity of every person.
Ask your representatives to sign on to the
Frank-Paul
letter, strongly recommending that substantial cuts in military
spending
be on the table in all of the Administration's work to reduce the
national
debt.
Wage Peace,
Peter Lems and Mary Zerkel
P.S. We've spent $1 trillion on the wars in
Iraq and
Afghanistan. AFSC has been asking young people from all over the
country to
make videos showing how they'd rather see that money spent. Join the
One
Tillion Dollar Video contest by making a short video before the
November 30
deadline. Please share this with any young people or youth groups you
know. The winner gets a trip to Washington, DC, to show the video
to
members of Congress.
