PHILLY
AREA ACTION:
An Invitation: to antiwar and
social justice activists to discuss what we as a movement will do in
the coming months. How can we work together and build a common
movement to end the US wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan?
The US military stretches all over the
globe with bases in more than 60 countries. Social programs and
education are left unfunded, while military spending is out of
control. Millions in the US are unemployed and a meaningful jobs
program is not in place. Join us for a discussion of the next steps
we all must take to end these wars and occupations.

Hugh
Giordano for State Representative, BBQ fundraiser
FUNDay
Sunday Barbecue on July 18th, from 4pm ‘til 7pm.
603 Renz
St. in Roxborough.
Come out and show your
support for Hugh Giordano, candidate for State Representative in
District 194. We will have hotdogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers,
salads, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and dessert. There will be lots
of activities for children, as well. A contribution to Friends of
Hugh Giordano ($20 per person, kids are free) will be taken at the
gate. We will have raffle prizes and an auction. If you have
something to donate for the auction, please bring it with you. We are
looking for serious as well as humorous items – anything from gift
cards, offer of a personal service, or something completely
zany, like a stuffed animal or bunch of bananas. The idea is to
have lots of fun while raising money at the same time.
During the barbecue, we are kicking off “Moms
for Hugh.” Women of all ages – from great grandmoms to new-borns,
working women, stay at home moms, aunts, sisters, daughters – are
all invited to show support for Hugh by participating in a huge group
photo and sending a message out that women want Hugh in Harrisburg to
represent us – not a CEO or wealthy, business owner. Running
for office requires time and money. Hugh’s staff are all
volunteers, but we need donations for literature so we can get the
word out.
If you cannot join us, please consider
sending a donation at
www.hughgiordano.com/?page_id=7. Checks
payable to “Friends of Hugh Giordano” may be sent to: 5145
Webster Street, Philadelphia, PA 19143.
For more
information, please call (215) 243-7103 or email

Hope to see you at the
barbecue and thanks for your support,

Talk] CREF is meeting Jul 20: Help us deliver them a thousand
postcards
Just a heads-up about an email we will be sending
later on this morning. CREF (the second half of TIAA-CREF) is having
its annual meeting in NY on July 20. We are planning to be there and
deliver at least a thousand postcards with a simple message "divest
from the Israeli occupation." Some of you have already gotten
packets of postcards and are signing people up (thank you!)
If
you can commit to get at least 25 signed postcards to NY by July 19,
please let us
know:

Spread
the Word. Expose the Corporate Takeover of the Internet
Did you read the New York Times?
In a
prominent editorial, the paper exposes AT&T, Verizon and Comcast
for flooding Congress with cash to kill Net Neutrality.
These
companies have funneled millions of dollars in campaign contributions
to elected officials. ... and now they expect a return on their
investment.
To shed light on this dirty game,
Free Press is launching "Corruption Road: How Corporate Money
and Astroturf Pollute Media Policy." Check it
out:
http://corruptionroad.freepress.net
We're
giving you a first look at Corruption Road because we need you to do
two things to help stop this takeover:
1. Take a
drive down Corruption Road to learn more about the shady
influence-peddling.
2. Help spread the word about Corruption
Road via e-mail, Twitter and Facebook.
What's going on is
outrageous. But we can stop it by bringing this corruption to light,
shaming corporate sellouts in Congress, and convincing more people to
stand in support of NetNeutrality.
Thank you for taking action,
Timothy Karr, Campaign Director,

Human
rights advocate sentenced to six months in federal prison for civil
disobedience
at the School of the Americas
Washington,
DC resident Michael Walli was one of four human rights advocates who
were arrested during the annual November Vigil to close the School of
the Americas / Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation
(SOA/ WHINSEC). Michael Walli was sentenced on Monday, June 14, 2010
to six months in federal prison.
During his
November arraignment, Michael told judge Malon Faircloth that he
would not pay any bail and that he would not voluntarily return for
the trial. Michael Walli made good on his promise and Faircloth
issued a warrant for Michael's arrest. Federal marshals arrested
Michael in March 2010 at the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House in
Washington, DC.
Ken Hayes, Father Louis Vitale
and Nancy Gwin, the three human rights advocates who were arrested
together with Michael Walli, were each sentenced in January 2010 to
six months in prison as well - the maximum allowed for the charge of
tresspass. The extremely harsh sentences are intended to deter others
from following the example of the 'SOAW 4.'
"Those
who speak out for justice are facing prison time while SOA-trained
torturers and assassins are operating with impunity," said SOA
Watch founder Father Roy Bourgeois.
The
SOA/WHINSEC is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers.
Its graduates are consistently involved in human rights atrocities
and coups, including the El Mozote Massacre in El Salvador and last
year's military coup in Honduras. In 1996 the Pentagon was forced to
release training manuals used at the school that advocated the use of
torture, extortion and execution.
SOA Watch
works to stand in solidarity with people of Latin America, to change
oppressive US foreign policy, and to close the SOA/WHINSEC. In
November 2010, thousands will return to the gates of Fort Benning to
call for justice and accountability.
Send a
message of solidarity to the
prisoners:

Check
out the Hybrid Scorecard and Green Travel Challenge
I
thought you might be interested in this new resource from the Union
of Concerned Scientists. They have a new Hybrid Scorecard on their
award-winning HybridCenter.org website that rates all the hybrids on
U.S. roads today on their environmental impact, technological value,
and affordability. It’s a great way to find out which hybrid might
be right for you.
They also have a “Who’s
Got Hybrids” feature where people give their real world views of
their hybrids. It’s a great contest, and a great website, so go

Brilliant
Speech: Chicago Teachers Union President-Elect Karen Lewis
You
must listen to this speech. It is a brilliant, class conscious speech
the augurs a new teacher fightback in Chicago against the
corporate-led destruction of public education. We should all follow
her lead! Also don't miss her vice president, Jesse Sharkey, speaking
at Socialism 2010 (http://www.socialismconference.org/) about the
battle to change public education!
