Philly needs to hear about real universal health care
        Adam Gilden Tsai [mailto:agildentsai@yahoo.com]

Dear Mr. Whitaker,

The Philadelphia Weekly should print a story about the
better option for universal health care in
Pennsylvania.

Your reporter, Cassidy Hartmann, interviewed several
of my colleagues for a story about universal health
care. The City Paper printed a story about the Rendell
plan ("A Cure for What Ails Us") but they entirely
missed the fact that there is a better option for
universal health care, which has been introduced in
both houses of our state legislature. This option is
The Family and Business Health Care Security Act of
2007 (House Bill 1660; Senate Bill 300), which would
cover every Pennsylvanian under the same umbrella.
Think of it as Medicare for all; paid for by taxes,
but allowing free choice of any doctor or hospital.

By printing a story about HB 1660/SB 300, the PW will
complement the City Paper story, and more importantly,
will let Philadelphians know that there is even a
better option than the Rendell plan.

Sincerely,
Adam Gilden Tsai, MD

PHILLY AND NATIONAL ACTION:

Call Congress Today for Impeachment

Phone Chairman Conyers and phone your own Congress Member at 202-224-3121; ask them to start the impeachment of Dick Cheney, and ask them to immediately call Conyers' office to express their support for impeachment. Also email your Representatives:
http://www.democrats.com/peoplesemailnetwork/73

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Bob Brady , PA ~  D-1st Dist PHILA

Another Congress Member Backs Impeachment By David Swanson
http://afterdowningstreet.org/node/25094

Congressman Robert Brady, (D., PA), who represents portions of Philadelphia, on Tuesday signed on as a cosponsor of House Resolution 333, articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney.

Also on Tuesday, Cindy Sheehan, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Carlos Arredondo, Bill Perry and many other leaders of the movement for impeachment held a rally in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia was the first stop on the Journey for Humanity Tour after Monday's march and civil disobedience in Washington, D.C.  The tour began in Crawford, Texas, on July 10.

Congressman Brady is to be congratulated for his heroic stand in support of the rule of law.  He can be reached at (215) 389-4627 or http://www.house.gov/formrobertbrady/issue.htm

With the addition of Congressman Brady, and including the original sponsor of H Res 333, Dennis Kucinich, there are now 15 Congress Members for impeachment.  Including Jesse Jackson Jr., who says he supports impeachment, but who has not signed onto any bill, brings the total to 16.

These heroes are: Jan Schakowsky, Maxine Waters, Hank Johnson, Keith Ellison, Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee, Albert Wynn, William Lacy Clay, Dennis Kucinich, Yvette Clarke, Jim McDermott, Jim Moran, Bob Filner, Sam Farr, Robert Brady, and probably Jesse Jackson Jr.

The public is much more strongly behind the impeachment of Cheney, with 54% in favor and 40% opposed: http://afterdowningstreet.org/node/24390  It is impossible to say if that support is rising or falling, since - amazingly - only one poll has ever been done on the topic.

But H Res 333 http://kucinich.house.gov/SpotlightIssues/documents.htm only goes after a few of the obvious impeachable offenses committed by Cheney, and those few are related to the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and the threat of an aggressive war on Iran.  War is an issue that scares off timid Congress Members.  It's possible that articles of impeachment on other topics (spying, torture, signing statements, subpoenas, obstruction of justice, exposing a CIA agent, etc.) would garner more signatures.  The menu of possible charges has something for everyone: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/cheney2

Now is the time to ask your Congress Member to follow Brady's example: http://www.democrats.com/peoplesemailnetwork/73

You should ask members of the Judiciary Committee too:

ENDORSE  the Palestinian Call for Boycott:
http://www.academicsforjustice.org/petition/

In the last few weeks, university presidents across the US and Canada have rushed to issue statements about the proposed boycott of Israeli academic institutions by the British University and College Union. They view this boycott as a serious violation of academic freedom. Yet, given the general failure of these leaders to comment on any number of infringements of academic freedom that have occurred in recent years, including those close to home in the form of the politically-motivated denial of tenure to Norman Finkelstein and the colleague, Mehrene Larudee, who very publicly supported him, the harassment of Columbia University professors Joseph Massad and Rashid Khalidi, and the intimidation of faculty by Campuswatch, one might be excused for concluding that university presidents prefer to remain above the political fray and reserve their office for grave and important but non-controversial pronouncements on tsunamis. But now, even in the midst of the hot and hazy summer recess, university presidents have mobilized their most imposing academic rhetoric in expressing solidarity with Israeli academics and upholding the rights of all to engage in "an open exchange of ideas" and "freedom of association."

What is perhaps most perplexing about this trend is its entirely virtual nature, for in fact no one's freedom has been violated by the boycott yet under discussion. Nevertheless, university presidents are preparing in advance for what could be an "attack ... [on] all universities at their core mission"

To this end, I have created a petition at my university to ask the principal to retract her statement and support the organization of a forum to discuss the issues relating to the proposed boycott. This is the very least that a university should do. I urge my colleagues at other universities to do likewise.

Dozens of farm workers exposed to toxic pesticide Chlorpyrifos.
                Send your e-mail today!

Farm workers need you to e-mail the California Department of
Pesticide Regulations immediately. More than 75 workers were
laboring in the grapes last Saturday, when the adjacent almond
orchard was sprayed with the dangerous pesticide Chlorpyrifos.
The toxic chemical drifted over workers. Within minutes, workers
complained of headaches, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, memory
loss and chest pressure.
Please e-mail the CA Department of Pesticide Regulations (CDPR)
today and tell them to investigate these incidents to the
fullest extent of the law. It's time to ban dangerous pesticides
like Chlorpyrifos which put farm workers' health at risk on a
daily basis. Tell the CDPR to do its job and protect farm
workers from being poisoned by toxic pesticides.
        Tell-A-Friend: Every e-mail sent makes a difference.

Science Idol: The Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest

During the past several weeks, we invited the public to help choose the winner in Science Idol: the Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest. And after almost 20,000 votes were cast, Jesse Springer of Eugene, Oregon is the contest winner with this cartoon:

< help. your for asked we year, this earlier and practice, expose to worked has Scientists Concerned of Union The safety. drug pollution air warming global issues on science misusing appointees political stopped hasn’t that outrageous—but is government federal in interference>Springer is a self-employed graphic designer and an aspiring editorial cartoonist. "Cartoons are a powerful medium," he says. "If I can draw some compelling cartoons that shed light on the negative impact of governmental interference with science, and more people become aware of the problem as a result, then perhaps we can start to see a change for the better." Springer will soon be off to Washington, D.C. to have lunch with Washington Post cartoonist Tom Toles.

< help. your for asked we year, this earlier and practice, expose to worked has Scientists Concerned of Union The safety. drug pollution air warming global issues on science misusing appointees political stopped hasn’t that outrageous—but is government federal in interference>You can learn more about what motivated Springer to enter the competition and see all 12 finalist cartoons on our website.

What You Can Do
This year’s Science Idol contest is over, but political interference in science continues. Achieving substantive solutions to the problem will require the persistent and energetic engagement of both scientists and citizens.

If you're a scientist, engineer, or health professional with an advanced degree, join 12,000 of your colleagues as a signer on the scientist statement on scientific integrity. If you’re a non-scientist who wants to be kept informed about ways to defend science from political interference, sign the Citizens Call-to-Action.

The Latest News
Political interference in science has been all over the news recently. We thought you’d like to be aware of the following developments:

Letter to The Editor:
I was disappointed but not surprised to read the response from
Paul Rieckhoff of IAVA regarding the article recently published in The
Nation entitled "The Other War". I was one of the veterans interviewed
for the story and I want to say unequivocally that nothing about what I
had to say was taken out of context or distorted. I was told exactly
what the article was about and the questions were very direct. My
interview was recorded as I imagine the others were, so Mr. Rieckhoff
should be pointed with his criticisms and give specific examples rather
than making vague accusations.
A "fog of war" does not exist. Politicians and generals that are
not even remotely close to a battlefield deliberate the bad decisions
that are being made, not rank and file troops. The invasion and
subsequent occupation of Iraq violates the UN Charter, the Nuremberg
Accords, and the Geneva Convention. Subsequently, the politicians and
military leaders that allowed and continue to allow the occupation of
Iraq are guilty of war crimes. These crimes are further compounded by
the assertions of those in the highest reaches of this administration
that medical care be withheld from Iraqi civilians, that the Geneva
Conventions don't exist in Iraq, and for not meeting the
responsibilities of an occupying power under international law.
As an Infantry Officer Mr. Rieckhoff should know these things. He
should also know that you couldn't succeed in a "guerilla war" without
the support of the majority of the indigenous population. If we ever
had that support we certainly don't now. Mr. Rieckhoff knows that every
Iraqi killed, injured, or degraded makes an impossible mission even
harder. He also knows the futility of keeping US troops in a situation
where there can be no military solution. This article never alleged
that US troops are intentionally gunning down Iraqis and I don't know
anyone with a drop of sanity that has advanced that idea. The Iraqis
already know that these things have happened and are still happening
and reporting them here in the US isn't going to change that. Americans
need to know what is happening in Iraq because it's being done in their
name.
I have never heard Mr. Rieckhoff challenge politicians about Iraq.
In fact, he has done anything but that. While doing PR work for his
book release Rieckhoff was interviewed on NPR. During the interview he
was pressed again and again about what needed to change in Iraq. He
repeatedly ducked the question and finally responded with "it needs to
be somewhere between the President's stay the course and Cindy
Sheehan's bring them home now." What does that even mean? To me it
means he's ready for a career in Washington.
While I commend Rieckhoff for the work that his organization does
in pointing out a lack of care, training, and equipment for troops it
seems a bit myopic. It's like telling someone that is on fire that
they'll have great burn care if they can put themselves out and survive
the complications. Our troops should never have been sent to Iraq and
they need to leave now so that the Iraqis can have their country back
and decide their own future. The only way that anyone will be held
accountable for what has happened in Iraq is for the men and women that
have served there to continue to come forward.
This country has enough apologists for our continued occupation of
Iraq across the political spectrum. What it needs are people that can
speak plainly and tell the truth even when it isn't popular or easy to
hear. My fellow troops in this story should be commended for speaking
out and the military needs more people like them. I'll never understand
why some of the most ardent defenders of our actions in Iraq sit in
offices typing letters in places like Manhattan when it would seem they
should be in Iraq fighting what they believe is the good fight.

* Report  on Participation in the U.S. Social Forum in Atlanta,GA

The first ever United States Social Forum was an overwhelming success. Held in Atlanta from June 27th to July 1st, 12,000 people officially registered, and up to 15,000 participated in workshops and related cultural and political activities. Every state was represented as well as Mexico, Palestine, Guam, Puerto Rico and 64 other countries.
On Thursday  UFPJ  held workshops during every available slot; Torture, Terror and Political Repression - from Cointelpro and Attica to Guantanamo and the Patriot Act; Ending the War in Iraq, Preventing a New War; Iran's Nuclear Ambitions and Our Nuclear Realties; and "Keep on Singing Loudly":  the Power of Politics and Song.  Building a Stronger Movement: Multi-Racial Organizing for Justice in the Middle East and at Home was held on Friday and on Saturday morning Engendering Peace across Struggles for Social  Justice; Militarism - the 800 lb Gorilla in the (class)Room; and How to Build a More Coordinated Peace/Antiwar Movement? were held.  UFPJ Steering Committee members, co-chairs and staff helped to facilitate these workshops and panels, as well several others.
Judith LeBlanc, a UFPJ co-chair, was among the presenters during the first night's plenary on War, Militarism and the Prison Industrial Complex.
There was a major concert held on Friday night. The Indigo Girls opened, six other bands performed with hip-hop, reggae and R&B highlighted.  UFPJ co-sponsored the performance of the politically powerful and musically dynamic duo, Emma's Revolution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEcNAepozVA
The USSF was organized primarily by and for grassroots, people of color led groups and this was clear on the ground in Atlanta. There were many young people, mostly women and many folks for whom this was the first event like this that they had ever attended. The Social Forum began with much potential and ended with just as much promise. It's now our charge to realize this potential and promise, and to take back what we've learned and the experiences at the USSF into our own communities and organizing.
