1) ACORN is bringing a Presidential Candidates Forum to
Philadelphia on Monday, July 2 from 1-6 pm at the Bright Hope Baptist
Church, 1601 N 12th Street (12th & Cecil B Moore Ave). Confirmed so
far are Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Joe Biden and Barack O'Bama is trying to
alter his schedule to attend. The focus will be on living wages, the
foreclosure crisis, immigration issues and education. The cost is only
$10. We would like to have an NN delegation present. Please send me
your checks at the address below made out to "ACORN".
2) This Tuesday, June 26, is a special lobbying day in
Washington DC to restore habeas corpus rights. These are our
fundamental due process rights not to be incarcerated without charges and to
defend oneself which have been violated by the Bush administration. This
day is being sponsored by the ACLU, Amnesty International, and other civil
rights groups. You will be trained how to lobby and argue for restoration
of rights. FREE buses are being provided but you need to sign up by going
to aclupa.org or calling 215-592-1513 x123. What a great learning
experience for all. Bring your kids. People are marching all the way
from Chicago - 800 miles for this. Join this important and memorable call
3) Michael Moore's new film,
"Sicko", is coming to town next Friday, June 29. I was privileged
to see a preview of this incredible film principally calling for universal
health care in the US and reasonable government benefits that serve people
before corporations. But the understory is NN's same call that democracy
can only really function when people act in the polling place and require their
representatives to provide for their needs. This film will make you laugh
and cry and feel ashamed of how far the US has strayed from its potential.
But you will walk out feeling energized to do something about it. How can
we not? Moore asks "who are we?" We know who we want to be.
There are pending bills in Pa and in DC calling for universal health

JULY 4, 2007, Starting 1 PM
In the spirit of
our Declaration of Independence, join activist organizations throughout the
country to collaborate and forge common strategies and actions. As our
forefathers of this nation did, we too must face tyranny, this time from the
collusion of government, big business, media, and religion.
We convene to
form a strategic alliance with peace, pro-impeachment, civil liberties, 9/11
Truth, and other groups to develop a comprehensive strategy and implement
actions to deal with this emergency. Together we can eliminate the common root
cause of our separate activist concerns. Through this union we can access
the only power feared by this corrupt alliance … the power of
The convention will be inclusive as each delegate will have
the floor to describe their organization, primary concerns, strategies and
actions they propose. These strategies and actions will be part of further
discussions. There will be time for deliberation and participation in break-out
groups. Other activities include showing documentaries that support your cause
at a separate theater for delegates and general public.
This is also a

Philadelphia's First Homeless Running Club/ DONATE your old
I could not be more excited to announce that
in three weeks Philadelphia will have its first-ever Homeless Running
Club...yes, you read that right. Each morning as I begin my run I am
greeted with the smiles and applause from many of the guys who stay at the
Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission Shelter. Their warm welcome is as friendly and
dependable as the sunrise and earlier this month I had an epiphany – why am I
just waving and running by, why am I not taking them with
After conversations with
the staff and the members at the Shelter, I am very proud to announce that 12
residents of the Rescue Mission are now officially enrolled in the Sunday
Breakfast Running Club. The program starts in mid July and I will be holding
jogging sessions for the Shelter three times a week. The members will be
rewarded for the miles they run with incentives such as movie tickets,
restaurant vouchers, department store gift certificates, etc.
I am asking
for you to please give your old running/walking shoes new life by donating them
to this Program – all sizes are needed, both men’s and women’s. And while
you’re at it, if you have some decent shirts, shorts, socks and pants, I’ll take
those too. Philadelphia Runner has graciously offered their store as a drop-off
location for your shoes and running gear. And as a way of saying thank
you, they will give you $10 off a new pair of shoes when you donate your old
ones. Philadelphia Runner is located at 1601 Sansom St, Philadelphia, PA
And if you don’t have
shoes, or you just want to give more, please consider making a cash donation
that will go toward purchasing the incentives for the members to reach mileage

What the bills are about:
In late 2004, Pennsylvania
became the 17th state to pass a law
that requires that certain percentages of
the state's electricity
must come from renewable energy sources.
law calls it "alternative" (not "renewable") energy
were the first state to include fossil fuels in such a law
making it the dirtiest law of this sort in the nation.
HB 1203 and
SB 715 set out to fix a few of the many loopholes in
the law (yet didn't
attempt to remove any of the dirty energy
technologies from the "alternative
Why we oppose them:
These bills were both amended in
the past week with language
sought by the trash incineration industry.
These amended bills
will now provide increased financial incentives to both
incineration and waste coal burning industries -- the two
polluting technologies to be considered "alternative energy" in
law. This amendment was accomplished through obscure
pertains to whether an electricity generator is the
initial owner of the
alternative energy credits. These
amendments aren't needed to support
clean, new energy generation,
like wind and solar.
The House version
also includes an amendment that would subsidize
large farming operations
(primarily those that would be
considered "factory farms") by increasing the
eligible "customer-generator" alternative energy sources.
amendment was sought by the Farm Bureau (the lobby group
advocates for big agribusiness interests) so that animal
digesters can take advantage of the financial advantages that
otherwise go to wind. We'd rather see these advantages go
power, not to subsidize factory farm waste management methods.
If it has a
smokestack, it's NOT clean energy!
Support wind power! Stop
incineration in all of its forms!
